Anzac

Built between 1752 and 1754 by Abraham Van Robais, the "Folie" ("folly") de Bagatelle was transferred to the de Wailly family in 1810. An English-style garden was then added to the French-style park. The whole covers about 11 hectares and highlights marvellously the harmonious proportions of the castle.

Restored after the Second World War, the gardens were added to the list of historic sites, in 1946, for their rare and ancient species. Since 1998, Mme Patricia Chagnon, the new owner of the castle, with the help of an English landscape architect, Mr. Young, has begun to give a new lease of life to these gardens and has opened them up to the public.

Work was undertaken based on archives found in the castle:

• two ponds have been made to create a better transition between the French garden and the English park
• the lindens have been cut back
• a bed of white roses, surrounded by box trees, has been planted in the centre of the lawn
• the rare species, some of them over a 100 years old, have been inventoried and shown to their best advantage
• new trees and shrubs have been planted.
