Flamboyant Gothic in style, St Sepulchre church is known today for its exceptional stained glass windows; created by Alfred MANESSIER. It now houses the Entombment.

The Alfred MANESSIER stained glass windows

In St Sepulchre church, the changing light which filters through the coloured glass, punctuated by the movement of the leads, takes over the space to the point of making one forget its stonework. As if St Sepulchre had been built just for MANESSIER’s stained glass windows. The three windows of the choir glow red with the flame of the resurrection. On the south side, yellow and mauves symbolise the cornfield and vineyards. On the north side, a symphony of blue seems to call for meditation.

These MANESSIER stained glass windows brought to an end his work and completed his research of the end of the 30’s. As a young artist, he took inspiration from the approach of Charles Lapicque, engineer, physician and author and also a great painter, in 1938, to the theory on the perspective of the eye and the perception of contours. Lapicque discovered, in fact, that contrary to classical art for stained glass windows, blue would be used in close and static planes and red, orange and yellow in distant moving ones; sky and water.

Alfred MANESSIER, a synthesis of the culture of France and of Picardy which forged him, is a great master of contemporary painting. St Sepulchre is a magnificent opportunity to get to know him.
